She scored 19A1s , and 1 A2. She is the best SPM scorer for 2008.
She did not have tables to study. Nor the luxury of tuition classes, unlike most of the other students. All she had is the small living hall in her house for her to study. Daily expenses is RM 5; RM 4 for bus. She’s left with RM1 for herself.
She lives here.

Nik Nur Madihah Nik Mohd. Kamal is a student of Sekolah Menengah Agama Arab Maahad Muhammadi (Perempuan), Kota Bharu, Kelantan. She made us all proud with her success. And made us ashamed with our failures, filled with plenty of excuses.

Tahniah atas kejayaan mu, adik.

Hi everyone,
Congratulations to Cik Nik Nur Madihah Nik Mohd. Kamal.
Very heartening that she achieved such highly commendable SPM results!
She should be given 100% financial assistance for her to pursue her post-SPM education. Her very ‘tough’ environment, with no tuition, proper diet, et cetera, would have prepared her to face future pursuits. Tthe Govt and/or private sector should now come forward to offer her scholarships, bursaries, so that she can now concentrate even more on her education.
Good God….looking at her living conditions…hello Mr. UMNO …where are you…..duit sudah habis kat Putrajaya dan submarine????…..With stories like this coming out BN is a goner….this girl succeeded against such great odds…..congratulations!!!!!

i’m not buying this crap.its impossible to score 20As without any help.she scored straight As is due to the fact that she is a Muslim and the exam standard is getting lower.students are definitely not getting smarter.20 As it puts off ridiculous.
an “embarassed to say” Malaysian undergrad at a prestigious university in the U.S. who was denied a scholarship despite the fact o9f having scored 10 A1s in SPM.thanx to the US government,i am pursuing my dream!!!:P
Hi grammy,
I understand your feelings. Similarly, many people have the same feelings and suspicions that “the exam standard is getting lower”, with those who should genuinely obtain 10 1As lumped together with those who don’t deserve to get such results. The mistaken ‘democratisation’ of getting more and more As, making parents and the students feel good!
Nonetheless, we should consider each case on its merit. Notwithstanding the probable “exam standard is getting lower”, in the case of Cik Nik Nur Madihah Nik Mohd. Kamal, who obviously didn’t have the best living conditions and environment for studies, I would propose that she deserves to be given a scholarship. Many scholarships have been hijacked by the cronies of politicians, top govt. officials and captains of industries for their children and relatives!!
while we may wonder how one can get 20As, its still a commendable effort by an individual. However, as she comes from agama school, i suspect that some of the subjects are inter-related. she could have taken 4-5 agama subjects, studying the same topics/areas for different subjects. Regardless of that, its not easy to answer so many exam papers. So, for me, its an achievement. i just hope they can publish the list of subjects she took.
my stupid mind also wants to think like this - why would some one from poor family purposely register for 20 subjects. if indeed the purpose is to ensure better future for family, even 16As is enough. So, is there some sort of challenge or desire by the student to achieve some sort of “history”?
well, i’m in two minds. its an inspiring story, but yet it doesn’t really make sense. perhaps in coming days, some newspaper will do a feature on her and reveal the details of her achievement.
studying in poverty is not easy. i never had tuitions while nearly the rest of my class went for it. pagi makan roti/biskut sahaja. can’t afford to buy many reference books. sometimes, living in less-than-luxury environment makes us more focused. we won’t have much to do. as long as don’t compare with classmates and get depressed, one can progress.
Thanks to BMahendran.com for published very important information. At least the story that you wrote could motivate other student followed her achievement. I agree with Mr. Tan suggestion to support her fully by the government of Malaysia, not by others. She’s bring and showing us true colors and made us as new Malaysian generation very proud.
grammy and poobalan,
why not your own son or daughter got 20s A1…why are you not supporting this girl?…because she is malay and muslim?
Let say, she is chinese or indian or of your own race. Your comment would be very wonderful…is it?….racist!!!! go to hell
Thanks to tan and mr john for supporting….
i dont want to answer the suspicions. coz i don’t know.
wat i do know is this; she is a top scorer who deserves the rightful help, namely from the government machinery.
i really think this little sister deserve recognition, and as said by Mr Tan, she must be given full scholarship to pursue her dreams ( which is to do Physics in West Asia)
hats off to such a brilliant and resilient gal! we support u adik!
Frankly i don’t mind on how many As u got, it looks taking As is an easy take in our country, it really prevail. Just to remind all of us, don’t too mind on As. Every years we have so many students with a lot of As, now even 19As so where is our top scientist or other genius? Why we don’t have nobel prize winner as some Asia country like Japan and China, they do have some, though their student did not take so many As. Einstain is not an As student but moderate.
We can bluff ourself but not the world, academy wise, technology etc we left quite behind.
However, this is not easy for the girl who came from a poor family to have such achievement. Even she took religious subjects, honestly, this is not easy too. Congratulation!
usually, i don’t response to people who resort to phrases like “go to hell”. However, i like to clarify/correct your statements:
1. I did not say i not supporting the girl. in fact i said its hard to answer so many exam papers and IT’S AN ACHIEVEMENT. I also said its not easy to study in poverty.
2. its nothing to do with the person is muslim or malay. the issue is that she studied in agama school, where some of the subjects are inter-related. Even a non-malay can study agama subjects (as one guy who got 14/15 As did - he took tasawwur). In her case, she took
Pendidikan Islam, Bahasa Arab Tinggi, Tasawwur Islam, Pendidikan al-Quran dan As-Sunnah, and Pendidikan Syariah Islamiah. the top scorer in 2006 also came from the same school, if i’m not mistaken.
anyway, i have found out why she took 20 subjects. in her own words:
“Sebelum ini jika dilihat kebanyakan pelajar cemerlang datang dari keluarga yang senang seperti anak guru, pegawai bank, oleh itu, timbul idea saya mahu buktikan kepada masyarakat bahawa anak nelayan juga mampu mencatatkan kejayaan yang cemerlang seperti orang lain.
Jadi, saya mencabar diri sendiri supaya mencatat sejarah dengan 20A.”
She also scored 5As in UPSR and 9As in PMR for the record.
and of course, she deserves a scholarship. it has been announced last year that the top scorers will be automatically offered scholarship. So Nik need not worry.
Hi everyone,
Thanks Poobalan for some background info. of this gem of a gal.
Govt. should step in with a scholarship so that she can continue to be a role model to other children of disadvantaged families that even a simple fisherman’s daughter can excel!!
Cik Nik Nur Madihah should continue to “buktikan kepada masyarakat bahawa anak nelayan juga mampu mencatatkan kejayaan yang cemerlang seperti orang lain.” It’s great that we have such a girl to motivate other children in like circumstances to persevere and excel even under tremendous odds!
No one is questioning the fact that the girl must have put in a lot of effort to get her As. It is however a fact of life in Malaysia that candidates of rural SMKs in Malaysia have their papers marked under a different marking scheme. The marking scheme is much more lenient than those used for urban schools. Such discrepancy in the marking schemes for public examinations at the secondary school level exist through out the world in order to give the disadvantaged a leg up. However, entrance to tertiary educations is entirely based on merit unlike Malaysia with its quotas in favour of Malay students.
Because of this discrepancy in the marking schemes we do not really know how good this girl is. Moreover, this discrepancy also cast doubt over the actual abilities of this girl. Thus, the government came up with the matriculation system to separate Malay top scorers like her from other students who go through the STPM system. Why the need for this separation? Are the Malay top scorers not strong enough to stand on their own? My feeling is that the government’s need to cover it own ass politically in order to justify its ‘ketuanan’ ideology create these misconceptions of Malay students as being given more than undue help.
The private sector is unfortunately a very harsh world. When one walks into it with the perception that ones position is due to suspect qualifications it creates resentment. Non-Malay colleagues instead of helping the Malay worker will withhold vital information from him/her in order to make the Malay worker’s life miserable. This is especially true in the world of Sales and Marketing where knowing your way around the market is vital to ones career prospect. By default the non-Malays end up dominating the Sales and Marketing world so much so that even Malay bosses will look for non-Malay Sales and Marketing personnel.
No surprise then that many talented Malays prefer to work for the government or GLC’s. This brings us back to the different marking schemes meant to help disadvantaged Malays. UMNO must drop their ‘ketuanan’ politics in order to allow the Malays to grow. All help should stop after the SPM. The better Malays students must be allowed to shine in the field of their choosing. Their talents must not be hidden by the deficiencies of other Malay students. Let them compete against all Malaysians and if they are really good we will know and so will the world.
latest news: Adik Nik is offered scholarship by MARA, Petronas and BNM.
Well, my say will be -if she is good then, we will hear from her again in future..being a malay, if she scores better in her A-levels, we will know about it..so, no worries on whether she is good or not. Anyway, if I am not mistaken, this several years, only malays students seem to be keen on taking more subjects? the chinese and Indians are sticking to just 9 or 10, a rare 13 here and there? Then, after that girl from JB who got 17A1 for the first time(cn’t remember her name), there was this rule that you can’t take more than a certain number of subjects. This is also due to the fact that parents don’t have to pay any exam fees anymore. So, why is it that students are still allowed to take ridiculous number of subjects?
hi,
Madihah came from SMU (A) Maahad Muhammadi Perempuan Kota Bharu, which is an URBAN school in Kelantan. The students are more than 2000 and the fact that the school is one of the best in Kelantan (Arabic+academic)
Also the fact that she took 20 subject is merely in academic subjects. Because there are 10 more subjects (which arabic subjects) to be covered.
Syariah Islamiah and Quran Sunnah are totally different subjects s(seems like Ekonomi and P.Akaun) instead of Tasawur Islam and Pendidikan Islam are likely the same. BUT Bahasa Arab Tinggi is totally different bcoz there is no similarity (analogy: of course there is a different between taking Bahasa Inggeris paper and answering Physics in English right?)
So can you imagine the fact that she studied more than 30 subjects and it normally happens in Arabic School.
Also the fact that she is ranked 3 in PMR 2006. (after a Kelantanese girl SMKA naim lilbanat n a MRSM boy)
It is more than enough to prove us her capability.
Thank. do pray for her success. it is more sensible.
Just mu 2 cents.
Some of the comment above are acceptable, and some of them are not really wrong.
Personally, I’m not agreed with the comment mentioned that Malaysia Examination standard is getting lower. As we know, there are thousands of student sat for SPM Exam last year. If the “exam standard” is not as high as in 10-20 years ago, for sure, for the last year SPM result, more than half of candidates should score straight As’. But how many of them can get A?
Sekolah Maahad Muhammadi Perempuan is located at the Kota Bharu city centre. 5 minuted riding kapcai from my house. I don’t think that the marking scheme implemented for this school will follow the one used for rural school.
“i suspect that some of the subjects are inter-related”. For me it might be true and it might be not. For example, Biology subject and Science subject are inter-related, maths and add maths also inter-related. Even they are inter-related, can we still score them A? I don’t think we can. Adik Nik want to pursue in physics, I’m really sure that she must be from sciences class.
The most I respect with adik Nik is she never go to private tuition. I did before for few months only.
nikrid Liverpool, U.K
Let’s not play into our conspiracy theories and give her the benefit of the doubt of doing well.
I hope she stick to her plan of studying physics and maybe become a theoretical physicist one day. It’s about time a Malaysian get involved with quantum mechanics. She could be our first Nobel Prize winner.
Emon,
You still do not get it . Any school which is overwhelmingly Malay from an overwhelmingly Malay state is a ‘rural’ school. Listen to an UMNO minister talk about ’sekolah luar bandar’ and tell me if I am correct. Also, tell me please how many of these so-called super students have produced groundbreaking results on the world stage.
It is because of this bias that her real talents will never be known. In the GLCs whatever talents she has will be diluted by the mediocrity of her peers. To realize the full potential of a person that person must be in an environment where he/she has to fight against the best of the best. Does such an environment exist in Malaysia? She will most probably have to look abroad. Remember when you are abroad in the top universities against the best of the best excellence will only come from sheer grit and talent. Competition will be cut-throat. I have met our so-called super students abroad and they are viewed with jaundiced eyes by students from other countries because the whole world knows about the so-called affirmative action for the Malays in Malaysia. Compared to the blacks of the USA our super students seem to gloat in the fact that their achievements are due to affirmative action while the blacks will make it a point to make sure others understand they get where they are not because of affirmative action but because of their own diligence and talents. What the blacks get in the affirmative program in the USA is nowhere near the scope and depth of the privileges given to the Malays in Malaysia. Make no mistake about the fact that the blacks have achieved a lot more than the Malays in all fields save that of the Muslim religion.
That’s right an oppressed people in the US have achieved a lot more than the master race in Malaysia. Bear in mind the fact that until the early 1960’s blacks in many parts of the US blacks did not share equal rights with whites. Have the Malays ever wondered why with all the help given to them they still lag behind a so-called oppressed race? Like I said I do not question the hard work the girl must have put in to get her as. I however doubt UMNO will ever let the ‘rural’ schools compete with the rest of Malaysia on equal terms. Sad that the Malays will forever be dwarfed by their special rights. Perhaps UMNO have turned the non-Malays into high achievers like the blacks in the USA by way of their biased affirmative action programs.
Perserve? You tell me.
really nice … how can her success like this ? so great..

20 A’s, eh? huuh.. i wonder how she did that? i mean, for 20 subjects..that’s a lot to learn, to study, to sacrifice..
i took only 9 subjects (cuz my teacher forced me to).. if only i could take EST, seni and geografi..maybe i would get 11A 1B.. huhuhu… anyway, i dont think it is necessary for me to take more than 10.. letih la exam hari-hari..

EBRU
OUR POOR GRAMMY (n whoever related to)
Why should malay be treated like the black in US?Bcoz black are the PREDOMINANT, ORIGIN people of the US?(go back to school n relearn this)
BCOZ black occupy 98% of Military n Police force of the US..like malay does in MALAYSIA?
Ironic isn’t it?
When the gov applied the quota system-it is said unfair.Same as for matriculation system.
WHAT DO U WANT? U want to be treated the way other non-origin people like in other country..?U WANT TO BE TREATED LIKE THE BLACK IN US ?
People who never worship EVEN yr own GOD always never been thankful!
GRAMMY:
U shud come to medical faculty of university Malaya….where Chinese have the tradition of keeping senior’s books, lectures notes, and past years question and UNWILLINGLY share it with non-Chinese. This tradition has last MORE than 50 years!!
Im giving u this example is becoz this is what I SEE INFRONT of my very eyes. Unlike Yr statement-which obviously stated radomnly ON ALL MALAY!!
GRAMMY:
Just bcoz yr race is SO clique , they are SO UNITED (which is gud), and always HELP each other (what malay n Indian rarely have)..DONT THINK THAT malay ALSO do the same!!!!
VINNAN08:
I have couples of INDIAN best friends WHO got scholarship to study overseas and came back as a drop out or quit in the middle!WHAT is this?Isnt it a waste of money?BUT I don’t wanna complaint.I belive they DON’T REPRESENT the whole INDIAN students studying oversease –THEY WAY U Think FEW MALAY that u met Represent the whole malay!!!
IF u think OUR gov is so MALAY please find OTHER LAND which suit yr needs , which fit yr definition of ‘’FAIR’’..At least IF SOMETHING HAPPEN TO MSIA (touch wood), Chinese got CHINA , Indian got INDIA..bu we only have Malaysia!!!!THATS WhY 96% of military n polices force are MALAY!!!
Im sorry that the NON MALAY never met the real SMART MALAY coz they are all in BOARDING SCHOOL!!! U tickle me when u comparing yrself with stupid malay in ORDINARY NON-BOARDING SCHOOL!!!!
U think the teachers in MARA n other boarding schools are as hardworking as teacher in ORDINARY SCHOOL?NO!They expect all students in boarding school are smart-THE teachers teach the basis-THE REST:We learnt ourselves.WE do the study group.WE attended PREP!!(A term ordinary school never heard!)
AND, we were taught to be independent as early as 13.When u still depends on yr mother even just for a cup of tea, we have to travel (as young as 13) to other unknown city by bus without being accompanied by adult!
WE ATE VERY INDECENT MEAL, SLEPT ON A BED THAT HAD BEeN REUSED THOUSANDS TIMES, WE HAVE TO Q JUST TO USE THE BATHROOM, TO TAKE FOOD, TO USE THE PUBLIC PHONE, FOR EVERYTHING!!!!
IM ANOTHER MALAY WITH 10A1, science stream, state dramatist, school debater, active in sport-WHRE AM I NOW?Doing degree in my beloved country.I live in small city.My dad is an ordinary government servant.DO I complaint?I guess I have to now.
WHEN malay never complaint the fact that Chinese always bias during interview in PRIVATE SECTOR-The Chinese complaint about malay who goes to university using the equal path!
GRAMMY,
If u don’t believe the fact that SHE GOT 20AS BCOZ SHE IS MUSLIM N MALAY-u think we all here believe u got 10As??????
PLEASE, DON’T GIVE BAD NAME TO Other unfortunate STRAIGHT A STUDENTS LIKE ME N OTHER!
Tahts not the attitude of 10A students!U R WHAT? 10A1 and failed in HISTORY???????
OR..Never take up morale subject?!!?
OR YouR RICH PARENTS SO BUSY FEEDING YOU KFC AND SENDING U TO TUITION they forgot to teach you about yr own RELIGION-WHERE I BELIEVE all religion teaches their follower TO RESPECT OTHER RELIGION N RACES?!!!
WHY BLAME MUSLIM??????
IF GOV IS REALLY BIAS-It should be on BUMIPUTERA where there a lot of NON MUSLIM who r also BUMI!!!! (go back to school needy!!)
IF GOV really bias- WHY SHOULD IT BE KELANTAN? Why should they help the kelantanese?SO that there will be more people that will OPPOSED the gov?U STUPID!
IM sorry THAT u only got MANY As with very little brain!
IF YOU ppl REALLY want yr kids to be great in NOT ONLY THEIR STUDY, but also in other things they do in their life…PLEASE, teach them the human n moral value.TEACH them about their own GOD regardless what religion u believe. Please go to mosque, church n temple more often!!!!!
This poor girl is the best example.WHEN u have the right attitude U have the right brain n right act.But since SHE IS MUSLIM,even more, UNDER the state of non-GOV ruling, she is not treated the way like other straight As kids who their parents are those belong to the rich n famous ppl.
AT least, GRAMMY’S dad manage to send him for TUITION where there are so many SOALAN BOCOR!!!.
Pathetic SPOILT,FAT, URBAN KID!!!
Ohh..dont forget to apply for the GREEN CARD.SO that your kids will have ‘’guaranteed’’ future.shall we see how asian being so ‘’wanted and welcome ‘’ there…oh..IF U come to have Daughters…PLEASE don’t let them sell their body the way COCO LEE did just to be ‘’SUCCESFULL’’
